Dont Blame the Eater Essay Example for Free
Dont Blame the Eater Essay In his article dont blame the eater Zinczenko blames the food industry for the obesity epidemic. Zinczenko opens his articles with a personal story about growing up eating fast food because his parents split up, his mom had to work and he had no other options. He goes on to give statistics on childhood diabetes due to obesity. Zinczenko then insists that complicating the lack of alternatives is the lack of information about what exactly were consuming. over all Zinczenko is advocating changes in the fast food industry because he believes there is a direct link between obesity, monies spent on fast food advertising and the costs of health care. I agree with Zinczenko that the fast food industry needs to change by as Zinczenko put it ââ¬Å"providing the nutrition information people need to make informed choices about their products. However I question his claim of not blaming the eater that the food industry is to blame for todays rate of childhood obesity. After all I do believe as Zinczenko states ââ¬Å"shouldnââ¬â¢t we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast food restaurants? â⬠Growing up my parents divorced and, like Zinczenko, I was a latch key kid. Everyday my parents made sure my brother and I had lunch for school and dinner that night. As a parent today I understand the pressure of taking care of things, kids, school, work, extracurricular activities, laundry, making dinner and then trying to squeeze in quality time with the family and possibly a social life. With all that going on we always have a choice. I make my family and what they eat a priority, so I make it a point to buy health easy snacks like fruit, yogurt, cheese sticks, and granola bars. Dont get me wrong we buy and eat cookies, and on a Friday night dinner is takeout. But the rest of the week I make it a priority to cook and eat at home. This means planning ahead, it may mean I cook in advance during a really busy week, we will have leftovers once a week and the crockpot at times is my best friend. I do it because the health of my family is important to me and I choose not to feed them fast foods. Over all I believe it is the responsibility of the individual and the parents of children to make the right choices and to educate themselves and their children about making the right choices and typo educate themselves and their children about healthy eating habits. Hopefully with education and the help of government regulations we can help guide people into making better choices and help fight disease due to obesity, after all as Zinczenko said the problem isnt just theres its all of ours.

The Evolution of the American Dream Essay -- Essays on the American Dr
Comparing the perspective of the American dream in the 1920ââ¬â¢s to the American Dream in the 1940ââ¬â¢s and present day seems to be a repeating cycle. The American dream is always evolving and changing. The American dream for present day is similar to the dream of the 1920ââ¬â¢s. An Ideal of the American life is to conform to what our society has determined is success. Money, materialism and status had replaced the teachings of our founding fathers in the 1920ââ¬â¢s. A return to family values and hard work found its way back into Americanââ¬â¢s lives in the 1940ââ¬â¢s. The same pursuit of that indulgent lifestyle that was popular in the roaring twentyââ¬â¢s has returned today for most Americans, many Americans are living on credit and thinking that money and the accumulation of material items can solve all problems. Through film, literature, art and music, an idealized version of what it means to be an American has changed from money, materia lism, and status of the 1920s to hard work and family values of the forties. ââ¬Å"Money is the root of all evilâ⬠(Levit). Man and his love of money has destroyed lives since the beginning of time. Men have fought in wars over money, given up family relationships for money and done things they would have never thought that they would be capable of doing because of money. In the movie, based on F. Scott Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s novel, The Great Gatsby, the author demonstrates how the love and worship of money and all of the trappings that come with it can destroy lives. In the novel Jay Gatsby has lavish parties, wears expensive gaudy clothes, drives fancy cars and tries to show his former love how important and wealthy he has become. He believes a lie, that by achieving the status that most Americans, in th... ...the 1920ââ¬â¢s hopefully in the next decade we will repeat the American dream of the 1940ââ¬â¢s. Reflective Reflection - 817 Words
As I reflect at the end of the semester on my work throughout the semester, I see that I have improved as a writer. I feel like I have overcome my weakness and have turned them into strengths that can be used in my future courses. Over the semester I have worked on different types of papers and have used major and minor writing processes. I have also became more familiar with the APA writing format. One of the major writing processes that I have used is prewriting. During this process I like to use an outline to organize my writing. This writing process has helped me write my papers more smoothly. Even though I really could not use an outline on all of my papers, for example the annotated bibliography. I could use an outline on the theoryâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The risks I have taken in my writing process or in my final writing products over the course of the semester, is procrastination and not finding enough evidence. Procrastination has been a risk for me because I have waited till the last minute to do assignments. This has caused me to get lower grades on some papers. Not finding enough evidence has caused me to run out of things to say in my papers. This has caused my papers to be shorter than the length it is required to be. Taking risks in writing can be challenging and sometimes the outcome may not be what you want it to be. It could mean you are taking a gamble with your grade. Over the semester I have experienced this and realized what I need to improve on. When I experienced these risks I have learned from them. I hope to improve in the risks I took and will carry them when I take English next semester or once I transfer to a University. When I did the literary analysis assignment I did not have enough evidence throughout the paper. I lacked the length that my paper was supposed to be and it showed in my grade because I received a C on the paper. When I first started reading Siddhartha I really did not understand the authorââ¬â¢s word choice and it was hard for me to understand the context. When we had to complete a literary analysis chart this gave me a better understanding of the context and helped me write my analysis paper about the book. When I did my annotated bibliography assignment I took aShow MoreRelatedReflective Reflection On Reflective Practice2289 Words à |à 10 PagesReflection is considered as a state of mind which is a continuous practice (Fanghanel, 2004, p. 576). Minimum Wage Increase Or Will It Remain The Same
The real question everyone wants to know is, is the minimum wage going to increase or will it remain the same? Let s go back in time to where it all started in 1938. President Franklin D. Roosevelt set the minimum wage to twenty-five cents an hour. FDR had a great statement about minimum wage and it s not for little kids. The statement proposes no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in the country (Olsen). This is the original thought behind what we now know, today, as minimum wage. The problem is that other salaries have risen exponentially and the minimum wage has remained stagnant and has not kept up with inflation. When I think about minimum wage, I think about all the jobs that are out there and how many people are unemployed and struggling to find a job. If the minimum wage increases and stays with the cost of living, this will change people s income and help those who are living off of minimum wage. W ith minimum wage going up it can help provide income to our civilization. It is necessary, but can t be increased so dramatically so soon. It is hard to think about, but the lives that are touched the most by a low minimum wage are often children. These children also have less time with their parents because their parents will often have to work overtime or several jobs to make ends meet. If the minimum wage were to go up, parents could provide more for their children, but it can tShow MoreRelatedThe Issue Over Minimum Wage854 Words à |à 4 Pagesbefore hand would have never dreamed of having.
